John Mason held an orienteering taster for Banchory Scouts on evening of 30th May, with 3 courses around Scolty, 2km yellow standard....

The introduction was in the pouring rain, with 22 noisy scouts, most had never heard of orienteering. We used training kites with a code letter on the back, so the scouts set off with map in bag, a free pen to record the code letters. They all knew the area and armed with 5 minutes of orienteering expertise, they were splashing down the path from the start kite in 1's and 2's, the noise slowly fading into the woods.

By 9pm the rain had stopped but a million midgees were out in force, 18 noisy and damp scouts were happily recounting their routes on soggy maps to waiting parents. A few scout leaders headed off to flush out the last 4, who had got to control #3, got distracted by a den and then got no further. A bit later than planned, all 22 were returned home in one piece.

Certainly an easy format, minimal planning and some happy customers.
