Maroc member, Andrew McMurtrie, and mountain marathon friend, Caroline Watt, finished a respectable 8th place (and 1st mixed team) in the B-class of the Highlander Mountain Marathon at the weekend, covering over 50km and over 3,000m of ascent.  The event was centred in Kinlochewe, nestled under the mighty Slioch and the Torridon mountains, so the scenery whilst running was amazing with the routes taking competitors into areas most hillwalkers don’t normally venture.

The Highlander is the most intimate of all the regular mountain marathons and usually has some form of interesting transport thrown in – this year it was a fast boat ride across Loch Maree at the end of the first day to the campsite.  The friendliness of the event is epitomised on the Saturday evening with a ceilidh in a marque, and although beer and wine are served most competitors are too tired to drink much.  The dancing is certainly a good warm down from the days exploits and it was the bumpiest, roughest dance floor ever experienced.

The BBC2 Scotland programme The Adventure Show were on location during the weekend and Andrew & Caroline were caught on camera more than once but we will need to wait until the next series of the programme to see if they made the cut.
