Registration & Start Times

Registration will be open from 10.30 until 12.30 inside the hall (please leave dirty footwear at the door). The walk to the start is 600 metres and will be taped. This follows the verge of the main road through the village and involves crossing the road. Courses close at 2pm. Please remember to return to the hall to download, even if you do not complete your course.

Course Information

Course Distance
Green 4.3km
Orange 3.1km
Yellow 1.7km

Unfortunately a white course was not possible due to the lack of paths in the wood. The yellow course is a little shorter than usual but includes some off-track legs through the forest following linear features such as an earth dyke and recent forestry extraction tracks. These legs will have tapes to aid navigation.

There is also a short (100m) section of the yellow course along a quiet minor road. Orange and green courses may also include route choice along sections of this road. There should be very little traffic, but please take care and keep to the edge of the road. The main A97 road on the eastern boundary of the forest is out of bounds.

All courses use a map scale of 1:7500.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

Entry Details

There are no pre-entries. Adults on Green course £7, others £3. Please bring cash if possible. Maps will be collected at registration.

Dogs allowed?

Sorry, no dogs allowed on the orange and green courses. This is a condition of access by the landowner as there may be sheep on some parts of these two courses. There are several houses within the woodland. Please respect the privacy of these properties, which are marked as out of bounds.
