Organisers Report: Thanks to all competitors and helpers! Evelyn Hall |
Planners Report: It all came together in the end – a good turnout, especially for a Score event, with clear, sunny weather, if perhaps a little on the cool side for officials standing around. But there were times when it looked less promising. The weekend I tagged most of the control sites had all the paths converted to skating rinks and the forest knee deep in snow! I tried to give plenty of variety to the tactical options available. With a total distance of around 6.5 km round all the controls, there should have been plenty for all levels of competitors to go at, and giving everyone a chance to get into the more interesting parts of the forest. At the high performance end, bagging the lot within 60 minutes was designed to be achievable, and the outcome would then be determined on route choice round the easier controls. For those of more modest ability, the main choice was around which section of the high scoring controls to target, balancing between technical difficulty, ease of running, and proximity to the lower scoring controls. Most people took the back stretch from NW to SE, which tends to be the faster direction. For the beginners, there should have been enough “off path” targets to make it an interesting excursion. From comments at the finish, it sounds like most people enjoyed themselves, with problems down to admitted navigational blunders, or not reading the full control description. It is a shame that at Cambus the best bit of forest parallels the edge of the map, and there is always a concern that controls close to the edge result in wanderings off the map, and I had a couple of comments to this effect. The counter is that you know the control is marked close to the map edge, so plan to attack it accordingly. For all you Yellow Course regulars out there, take note of this - the highlight for me was listening to Fast Jon (Duncan) and Big Jon (Musgrave) comparing notes afterwards. The thing that made a big difference in their placings was how they chose to pick off the Yellow Course/10 point controls – and they both admitted to mispunching their control cards – so there is hope for us mere mortals after all! Thanks to Evelyn, Julie and Althea for helping collect in the controls, and Jon Musgrave for planning advice. Jeff Dickens |
