Did
you know there were some semi-permanent Orienteering Courses
recently opened at Bennachie, set up by Hilary Quick and Mark
Reeve. “Permanent” because they’ll be there all year round, but
“semi-“ as the courses will be changed regularly, so the
challenge is always fresh. Loads of training potential for you,
plus the chance to flex those budding planning/controlling
muscles. A great come-and-try-it opportunity to tell friends and
colleagues about, as Bennachie is already
well-known and used by many.
Courses normally on offer
-
an easy
course of about 2.5km, mostly on paths
-
a harder
one, more suited to adults, with long and short versions
(4.5/2.5km), taking people off into bits of the forest most
have probably never visited before.
Map packs
include a basic introduction to the sport and some hints and
tips for tackling the more difficult legs. Courses will be
changed every 6 - 8 weeks; Mark (M40 - just) will run the long
course and there'll be a (lavish?) prize for anyone who can beat
his time! There are also plans afoot for monthly mini-events on
Saturday mornings from March to September.
Thanks to the
generosity of the FCS, there will be no charge for maps, which
can be obtained from the visitor centre at Bennachie.
